Finding A Way | Kyle Spurgin

DCC has always been blessed by the help of volunteers, from those from area churches who have helped paint and clean dormitories, to youth groups landscaping on spring break, to folks in retirement who serve in offices, dorms, and community (the Arringtons these days, or Mrs. Crawford in the past, e.g.). Rarely does a young person starting out in a career (and marriage) have much time to volunteer, but this year Kyle Spurgin has found a way.  From 1:00 to 5:00 or 6:00 most weekdays, and weekends when there are games, he is out on the baseball field as...

Annual Alumni Baseball Season Kick-Off

Crusader baseball season opened Saturday, January 28, with an exhibition game against an alumni team, an exciting game that demonstrated that alums don’t have to go to seed after college. Those watching were impressed by the playing on both sides. But what happens after DCC baseball?  Professional baseball?  Ministry?  “Get a job”? A visit to the dugout revealed that, if the alums who showed up for the game are any indication, Coach Denny Dixon’s folks are doing what they ought to be doing. Though this is a highly unscientific survey, everyone was happy to tell me what they are...

Professor Hardy’s Ministry as Baseball Chaplain

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” These words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 4.8 (NIV) have become even more meaningful to me as I have served as chaplain for the DCC baseball team for the past three seasons. I love baseball, and the players and coaches I serve love it even more than I do. To play the game competitively at a high level requires commitment and discipline. While we try to remind ourselves that “it’s just...

Crusader Baseball Season Comes to a Close

The Crusaders’ impressive run in the NCCAA Central Regional Tournament came to an end with a hard-fought 10-9 loss to third-seeded Oklahoma Wesleyan University in the semifinal game on Friday. After getting excellent performances from their starting pitchers in their first four games, DCC was forced to take a committee approach on the mound, using four hurlers in the game. The Crusaders’ bats were hot, though, as evidenced by the nine runs scored. Coming into the tournament DCC was seeded fifth, but managed to knock off the #8, #4 and #2 seeds before finally bowing out. That performance was...

Crusader Baseball Defeats Southwestern Christian University

Just a few hours after eliminating the #4 seed in the NCCAA Central Regional Tournament, the Crusaders did it again, defeating second-seeded Southwestern Christian University, 7-4. DCC struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. SCU tallied two of their own in the bottom of the inning. That’s how things stood until the top of the 4th, when the Crusaders scored four runs during a two-out rally. Once they took the lead, they never looked back, adding single runs in the 5th and 6th innings. SCU managed to scratch out single runs in the 8th...

Crusader Baseball Defeats McMurry University

Trailing 4-2 with their backs against the wall, the Crusaders erupted for five runs in the top of the 9th inning to defeat McMurry University, 7-4, in an elimination game in the NCCAA Central Regional Tournament this afternoon. After pitching in relief the past two days, Alex Dobbie took the mound and threw a complete game for the victory. It was the third excellent performance from a DCC starting pitcher in as many days. The Crusaders now send Nick Carrell to the mound to face Southwestern Christian University in another elimination game starting at 4:00 P.M. Gary Hardy is...

Your Crusaders rode another impressive pitching performance – this time to victory over Hillsdale Freewill Baptist College to remain alive in the NCCAA Southwest Regional Tournament. Meanwhile, the Crusaders used a balanced offensive effort to score five runs on eleven hits to earn the 5-1 victory. Today’s win puts DCC into another elimination game tomorrow at noon against the loser of tonight’s game between Oklahoma Baptist University and McMurry University. Gary...

Crusader Baseball Falls to McMurry University at NCCAA SW Regional, Will Play Again Wednesday

Crusader Baseball opened play in the NCCAA Southwest Regional Tournament against McMurry University from Abilene this afternoon. The score was 0-0 until the top of the 11th inning, when McMurry was able to score three runs. Unfortunately, the Crusaders couldn’t come up with any in the bottom of the inning, so we now move to the losers’ bracket where we must keep winning to continue in the tournament. We’ll face the loser of the game currently being played by #1 seed Oklahoma Baptist University and #8 seed Hillsdale Freewill Baptist College at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow. Cal Westland (#34) pitched 10-1/3...
