Crusader Baseball Falls to McMurry University at NCCAA SW Regional, Will Play Again Wednesday

Crusader Baseball opened play in the NCCAA Southwest Regional Tournament against McMurry University from Abilene this afternoon. The score was 0-0 until the top of the 11th inning, when McMurry was able to score three runs. Unfortunately, the Crusaders couldn’t come up with any in the bottom of the inning, so we now move to the losers’ bracket where we must keep winning to continue in the tournament. We’ll face the loser of the game currently being played by #1 seed Oklahoma Baptist University and #8 seed Hillsdale Freewill Baptist College at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Cal Westland (#34) pitched 10-1/3 innings of shutout baseball for us before finally giving up the first run in the top of the 11th. He left with one out and two men on base, turning the game over to Alex Dobbie. The first batter Alex faced doubled, scoring those two baserunners. Alex then got the final two outs of the inning. The coaches all agree that Cal’s outing today was the finest pitching performance in the history of DCC baseball. We were also kept in the game by some excellent defensive plays by third baseman Michael Maher, shortstop Nathan Maxey, second baseman Nick Tovar, and center fielder Ron Jackson.
